Alin joined ICHEC in February 2009 as a computational scientist. He is involved mainly in algorithmic and code development for different fields of physics and chemistry. His activity spans classical and quantum simulations for atomic, molecular, solid state and biological systems. Currently he is involved in parallelisation and optimisation of quantum electron transport code for realistic size systems. He is also collaborating on the development of an electronic structure code and specialisation of a general molecular dynamics code for biological systems.
Other important components of his activity in ICHEC are 3D visualisation and teaching. Alin presents introductory courses - on HPC, MPI and OpenMP - and a course entitled "Introduction to Modern Fortran" to various groups at different third level institutions. He also maintains, tests and benchmarks a series of physics/chemistry codes on Stokes and Stoney.
Alin completed a degree in physics from the University of Bucharest where he specialised in atomic and molecular physics. He was a postgraduate at the Atomistic Simulation Centre in Queens University, Belfast, where he studied in the area of time-dependent tight binding with applications to fluorescent molecules, under the supervision of Prof. Tony Paxton and Dr. Tchavdar Todorov.
