System Administrator - Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term research position as a System Administrator with ICHEC at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is available from 1 April 2014 to contract end date of 31 Dec 2015, with possibility of extension of contract. This role may be based in Dublin or Galway.

The Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC)

The Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC), founded in 2005, is Ireland's national high performance computer centre. Its mission is to provide High-Performance Computing (HPC) resources, support, education and training for researchers in third-level institutions and through technology transfer and enablement to support Irish industries large and small to contribute to the development of the Irish economy.

Job Description: The successful candidate will help deliver the base infrastructure services of ICHEC through the maintenance of existing hardware and software as well as the design and deployment of new services. This will require activities in a diverse range of technical domains such as networking, server virtualization, large scale data services, HPC systems management and user level services such as AAA, monitoring and support.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a track record in a research and development environment and strong Linux system administration experience is essential. Applicants must have a higher level qualification in computational sciences or engineering (or equivalent). Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about developing new services; and be able to demonstrate a logical and thorough approach to technical problem determination.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Advanced Linux systems administration skills with at least 3 years practical experience.
  • Good knowledge of server virtualization technology and techniques.
  • Good knowledge of local area networking and network services such as DNS.
  • Good knowledge of security principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in at least two of the following scripting languages: shell, Perl, Python.
  • Knowledge of HPC and large scale data storage architectures desirable.
  • Knowledge of web content management systems such as Drupal desirable.
  • Ability to effectively work as part of a distributed team.

Start Date: Position is available from April 2014
