Ivan Girotto joined ICHEC in May 2009 as a computational scientist. He is a graduate of Computer Science from the Ferrara University in Italy. From there he joined the Supercomputing Group of CINECA and worked in user support and program development among both industry and academia. During this time he was also a member of DEISA and was involved in user support for the DEISA Extreme Computing Initiative (DECI).
The DECI experience saw him employed in porting and optimisation of scientific codes at the largest HPC centres in Europe e.g. CSC, SARA, BSC, JUELICH etc. on hardware from a variety of vendors IBM, NEC, SGI, CRAY, etc.
He is now principally involved in assisting research activities, especially with Prof. Chris Bean's group where he is involved in code optimisation and upgrading the data distribution and communication model to attain greater scalability, in order to satisfy upcoming scientific challenges and to port the code to the Blue Gene and/or other MPP machines. This work involves spending time with tools like Intel Trace Analyzer and examining patterns of activity like that shown in the following screenshot, and correlating this with the science in question in collaboration with the research team.

Similar to the role he played when supporting research groups for both CINECA and the DEISA project, he is now working with the scientific community on existing codes with a view towards next-generation technology. He takes part in various projects that involves porting code to GPGPU architectures and associated performance analyses of applications.
