Michael joined ICHEC as a Computational Scientist in November 2011 as part of the PRACE project. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Theoretical Physics from UCD and an MSc with Distinction in Advanced Computational Methods for Aeronautics, Flow Management and Fluid-Structure Interaction from Imperial College London.

For his Master's thesis Michael experimented in methods of constructing flow solvers using C++. Following the submission of his work, he was funded by the Faculty of Engineering at ICL to continue his work and develop an application implementing such a solver. The result, Flow Illustrator 1.0, is a 2D Navier-Stokes solver designed to produce immediate results in real-time and does not require any prior knowledge of fluid dynamics. It is freely available as source or windows executable.

During his undergraduate studies, Michael spent a summer working as an intern in the BioMechanics Lab at the University of California, Berkeley. His time here was spent determining whether or not principles of engineering can be used to accurately model vertebral compression.
