Nicola joined ICHEC in November 2010 as a Computational Scientist. He studied for his Masters degree in Computational Physics at Udine University in Italy. The aim of his work on static friction for Kr/Pb(111) was to compare the results of simulations with QCM experiments. Currently Nicola is a PhD student at Udine University and his thesis is on simulating several aspects of friction at the atomic scale.
Previously Nicola has worked in CINECA as a Computational Scientist and his main duties included enabling, profiling and debugging of scientific codes on supercomputers like Bluegene P, linux clusters and AIX clusters. He was also involved in European projects such as PRACE and MMM@HPC. Besides the technical aspects, Nicola was involved in developing and implementing new potentials in LAMMPS and some computational aspects of Quantum Espresso and OpenFOAM.
