ICHEC designated as HMPP Centre of CompetencePosted on 27 October 2011 |
CAPS Enterprise has designated ICHEC as their joint partner for the European HMPP Centre of Competence. Hybrid Multicore Parallel Programming (HMPP) is a new programming environment bringing simplified programming for many-core hardware platforms. It provides a platform neutral alternative to CUDA allowing output to CUDA, OpenCL or any major many-core architecture such as Intel's MIC.
HMPP uses a simple directive based programming model allowing software engineers to designate areas for optimisation in their applications. This higher degree of abstraction dramatically reduces the learning barriers to manycore programming and offers tremendous performance potential by coupling parallel and heterogeneous cores within an easy to use environment.
This recognition highlights the commitment of ICHEC staff to the open standard, OpenHMPP, in particular by Gilles Civario who has been proposed to join the standardisation body for the new OpenHMPP standard. The OpenHMPP standardisation effort will be officially launched during the SuperComputing (SC) 2011 Birds of a Feather (Bof) session on 14th of November 2011 at 2 p.m in the CASCADE meeting room, Pan Pacific Hotel, Seattle.
ICHEC will continue to develop our competencies in GPU computing and in HMPP allowing Irish scientists and businesses to leverage the gains that hardware accelerators can bring to solving their problems.
Visit our GPU Computing microsite for more details on this and our other GPU related activites.
