Dr. Kashif Iqbal is a software architect/developer and certified project manager at ICHEC, undertaking the project management and software design/development role in various EU/Irish research programs and technology transfer projects. Kashif joined ICHEC in November 2008 and contributed to the national e-INIS project (http://www.e-inis.ie/) by developing a web portal to integrate applications and resources (both computing and data) for the Irish Bioinformatics community. His main research interests include: distributed, parallel and cloud computing architectures and their performance evaluation, web portals, data annotations, discovery and management.

Before joining ICHEC, he worked as a research assistant and part-time PhD candidate at the Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI), NUI Galway from July 2004 to October 2008. At DERI, he carried out his research in conjunction with the following EU funded research projects: i.e. the Adaptive Services Grid (FP6-IST-2.3.2.3-004617, Budget 11.5 million Euros) and the ECOSPACE (FP6-IST-5-35208, Budget 12.3 million Euros) project. His research effort produced a number of scientific publications and scientific talks. During his time at DERI, he also worked as a teaching assistant at NUI, Galway for the module on “Semantic Web Services”. During his time at ICHEC, he has supervised students over the summer in the areas of Web services based scientific workflows and benchmarking data parallelism frameworks (e.g. MapReduce). He has also contributed to the development and delivery of the teaching material for training in the area of Cloud Computing.

Kashif received his PhD in Computer Science from the School of System Engineering, University of Reading, UK (September 2006 – March 2012), while working part-time/full-time. His research focused on the design and development of a semantic registry and repository architecture to facilitate semantic service discovery, data and metadata management. Before starting his PhD, Kashif received his bachelor degree in Information Tehcnology from the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan (March 2000 – April 2004). During his undergraduate studies at NUST School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, he worked as a junior researcher in the research lab associated with CERN. While carrying out his research at NUST, his research proposal in the area of Grid Computing was selected among the top three proposals in young scientist program at the Forum Engelberg (March 2004), Luzern, Switzerland. He was also invited to attend the Forum and to present his research proposal.
