HPC Computational Scientist (Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Associate)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a HPC Computational Scientist with the Irish Centre for High End Computing (ICHEC) at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

This position is available from December 2021 to March 2024 to work on the EuroHPC IO-SEA project (https://iosea-project.eu). The candidate will be based at our offices in Dublin or Galway.

ICHEC is Ireland’s national centre for High-Performance Computing (HPC) providing digital infrastructure capabilities and expertise through R&D engagements and skills development programmes to academia, industry and public sector organisations.

With a highly ambitious leading-edge Strategy for 2021-2025, ICHEC provides infrastructure services and expertise in HPC and data intelligence to develop efficient platforms, solutions and services based on technologies including AI, high performance data analytics, Earth Observation, quantum computing and cybersecurity across a number of sectors including environmental sciences, healthcare, agriculture, energy, financial services and ICT.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will work on the IO-SEA project as a part of the Performance Engineering Activity.

The Performance Engineering Activity at ICHEC focuses on:

  1. research and development of methods and tools for performance analysis and optimisation of workloads and workflows for time-to-solution and energy-efficiency at processor-, node- and cluster-levels;
  2. Parallel programming models and frameworks targeting different HPC architectures (x86, GPU, ARM, RISC-V and others) on edge devices, clusters and cloud computing platforms;
  3. Software and tools for HPC data storage, file and management systems.

Duties: The successful candidate will

  • Work in close collaboration with partners at CEA (France) and Seagate;
  • Develop APIs and software libraries in C/C++ and Python Exascale storage management systems;
  • Develop interfaces for data management with respect to Seagate’s CORTX open-source object storage software system;
  • Develop interfaces in C++ based on Amazon S3 for external storage solutions;
  • Interact with other tasks and project partners to gather requirements, discuss design and implementation.

This is a role for a highly motivated problem-solver, with a creative and analytical mind to build new solutions that will have a global impact.

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

  1. A Master’s Degree with experience of at least 3 years, or a Ph.D. in a Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  2. Robust knowledge of computer architectures (processor, memory, storage systems).
  3. Exposure to and a good understanding of data storage system concepts such as distributed/parallel file systems (file, block, object), HTTP interfaces to cloud storage services such as Amazon S3.
  4. Software engineering and development experience in C, C++, Python on Linux.
  5. Working experience with software development practices, e.g. revision control, continuous integration pipelines.
  6. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team with academic, research and industry partners, with excellent communication and organisational skills.

Desirable Requirements:

  1. Knowledge of working on HPC systems and/or cloud based HPC systems.
  2. Familiarity with parallel programming and performance analysis at node and cluster levels.
  3. Experience working on I/O optimisation.
  4. Hands on experience in VM, containers (such as Docker or Singularity).
  5. Exposure to Agile/PRINCE2 project management frameworks.

Salary: €44,659 to €50,031 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).

Start date: Position is available from earliest possible start date in December 2021 to March 2024, renewable subject to funding availability.
