Research Computational Scientist/ Research Associate

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position as Research Computational Scientist/Research Associate with The Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is available from 1stDecember 2019 to contract end date of 31stDecember 2020.

ICHEC is the national High-Performance Computing (HPC) in Ireland and is a centre of domain, systems and software expertise that provides high performance software solutions to academia, industry and state bodies, through partnership, knowledge transfer, project delivery and service provision. ICHEC operates the national HPC service providing compute resources and software expertise for the research communities across all the main science disciplines through collaborative industry & academic partnerships and programmes of education and outreach.

Job Description:

Joining a team of computational scientists, the job will focus on contributing to the Centre’s various research and commercial projects with industry and the Irish public sector. These projects focus on optimising and developing new software for our clients. The role will report to the Technical Manager.


Working with industry partners, the job will focus on, but not be limited to:

  • Assisting in defining research objectives and carrying out original research, which supports the Centre’s novel technology and industry engagement programmes.
  • Working with an existing team of computational scientists on research or commercial consultancy projects under the supervision of a senior computational scientist or project manager.
  • Disseminating the outcomes of research and consultancy projects and delivering technical white papers and presentations at international conferences.


  • Applicants must have a Masters, or equivalent experience (min. 2+ years) in computational science, computer science, or a related discipline.

Essential Requirements:

  • Evidence of a track record working in an HPC environment, with strong software development experience in C / C++, OpenMP & MPI.
  • Demonstrable evidence of in-depth knowledge of parallel programming and performance analysis at node and cluster levels. 
  • Experience in programming for GPUs or FPGAs with CUDA or OpenCL.
  • Experience ins scripting languages, such as Python, and machine learning toolkits.
  • Exposure to edge computing devices and platforms such as Nvidia Jetson, Intel Movidius Myriad and Google’s Coral.   
  • Candidates should also have excellent communication and organisational skills; be comfortable taking responsibility for decisions; be highly motivated to develop and enhance software; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in computational science, computer science, or a related discipline.
  • Exposure to quantum computing, or exascale systemswould be an advantage.
  • Experience in modern software development practices, e.g. revision control, continuous integration, static analysis.

Salary: €37,874 - €38,418 per annum           

Start date: Position is available from 1stDecember 2019
