Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time position as Research Computational Scientist at the Irish Centre for High End Computing (ICHEC), National University of Ireland, Galway.

The Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) is the national centre for High-Performance Computing (HPC) in Ireland. The work involves using HPC-aided techniques for computer modelling, data management, big data analytics, artificial intelligence and performance engineering to develop solutions for a wide range of domains including environmental sciences, geophysics, healthcare and others. Job Description

The successful candidate to join a team of computational scientists, contribute to the National Service Activity, and the Centre’s various other research and commercial projects with industry and public sector organisations. These projects focus on optimising and developing new HPC services and software for our clients. The role will report to the National Services Activity Lead.


The job will focus on, but not be limited to:

  • Contribute to the National Services Activity, undertake technical evaluation of proposals, and assist in answering technical queries generated under the national helpdesk.
  • Assisting in maintaining and improving the National Service Activity, and supporting the Centre’s other activities including performance engineering, environmental sciences, AI & edge computing, big data & analytics, quantum computing, and training & education.
  • Working with an existing team of computational scientists on research or commercial consultancy projects under the supervision of the project technical coordinator.
  • Disseminating the outcomes of research and consultancy projects and delivering technical white papers and presentations at international conferences.

The postholder may also be required to take part in other activities at the Centre, as directed by the National Service Activity Lead to whom s/he will be reporting directly.


Applicants must have a Masters, or equivalent experience (min. 1+ years) in theoretical physics. computational science, or a related discipline.

Essential Requirements

  • Robust knowledge of HPC covering more than one of the following areas:
    • Experience working with HPC systems, batch schedulers, CI/CD pipeline tools.
    • Parallel programming models (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, OpenCL, etc.).
    • Demonstrable evidence of in-depth knowledge of performance analysis at node and cluster levels.
  • Practical experience building CI/CD workflows with relevant tools.
  • Working experience with languages such as C, C++, Fortran, Julia, Python, or similar.
  • Excellent documentation, communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Requirements

  • Knowledge of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling; Ansys, Abaqus or OpenFoam.
  • Experience in building, optimising and deploying machine learning and data science workflows on HPC systems.
  • Experience with virtualisation and containerisation of software stacks and applications (Kubernetes, Docker, Singularity, etc.).
  • Experience working in Agile/PRINCE2 team environment.
