Beyond Moore’s law: disruptive technology, opportunities and policy challenges

Posted on 21 March 2017

ICHEC Director, JC Desplat, will address the Institute of European Affairs (IEEA) on March 27th at 12.45 on the topic of: Beyond Moore’s law: disruptive technology, opportunities and policy challenges.

About the IEEA

The (IIEA) is Ireland’s leading think tank on European and International affairs and is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with charitable status. Its extensive research programme aims to provide its members with high-level analysis and forecasts of the challenges on the global and EU policy agendas which impact on Ireland. It acts as a catalyst for new thinking, new solutions and policy options, which give its members from the private and public sector a significant competitive advantage.

About the Speech:

Since 1965 Moore’s law - the axiom that the number of transistors per square inch of an integrated circuit doubles approximately every two years - has held firm. In that time it has fuelled many of the world’s greatest scientific breakthroughs. But with transistors now approaching 14 nanometres across, it is rapidly coming to the end of its lifespan. If the benefits of burgeoning technologies such as wearable computing, robotics and virtual reality are to be realised, a new approach will be needed to replace it.

In his address, Professor JC Desplat will outline some of the possible solutions to the end of Moore’s Law, from customised processors to chip stacking, and the additional policy challenges these might bring in areas such as data protection.
