ICHEC mail #25

Posted: 2006-07-27

Dear ICHEC users,

Emergency shutdown (walton)

The Walton cluster will be brought off-line today (27/07/06) at 15:00 for emergency intervention.

During the scheduled downtime on Tuesday and Wednesday, a new kernel was installed on all nodes. The combination of the existing GPFS software and the new kernel has since caused nodes to crash when performing heavy IO. As such it has become necessary to update the version of GPFS across the whole system. Rather than risk data corruption and more crashed jobs we have decided that the best solution is to take the whole system back offline and update quickly. All jobs run since last night will be refunded and the system should be back online again by 6pm this evening.

Note that the shared memory service (Hamilton) is not affected.

See the ICHEC systems status page for up-to-date information.

Apologies for the break in service.
