ICHEC mail #31

Posted: 2007-01-09

Dear ICHEC users,

Contents:

1. Maintenance session (downtime)
2. Updated programming environment (hamilton and walton)
3. New software release (walton)
4. Updated documentation for DDT/OPT
5. Monthly report for November/December 2006

------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 – Maintenance session
------------------------------------------------------------------------

A number of maintenance tasks need to be performed requiring that both compute systems be taken offline. Walton will be offline for approximately 32 hours between 10:00 on Monday 15 January 2007 and 18:00 on Tuesday 16 January 2007. Hamilton will not be brought down, but network access to it will be lost for portions of the downtime period. Running jobs on hamilton should remain unaffected.

Tasks include security and stability related software updates, hardware fixes for various nodes (Walton), updating the OS on the core switch to fix known bugs, re-organising some network cabling to increase resilience of certain services, and change certain BIOS settings on all compute nodes to improve reliability. Note that systems will not be kept offline any longer than necessary, and we expect user service on Walton to resume before 18:00 on Tuesday.

Note that all systems including e-mail and the ICHEC website will be inaccessible for part of the downtime. See the ICHEC systems status page for up-to-date information.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
2 – Updated programming environment (Hamilton and Walton)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Release 9.1. of the Intel compilers has been installed on Hamilton. Note that rel. 8.1 remains the default environment, so you will need to load the appropriate environment in order to use the new compilers. You can do so by using the command:

module load intel9

The Intel Math Kernel Library 9.0 (mkl) is also available from /opt/intel/mkl/9.0/.

Further information about these software can be found at http://www.intel.com/cd/software/products/asmo-na/eng/compilers/284264.htm and http://www.intel.com/cd/software/products/asmo-na/eng/307757.htm respectively.

On Walton, the Portland Group compilers have been upgraded to version 6.2.2. This environment can be loaded with the command:

module load portland

Further information about this new release can be found at http://www.pgroup.com/support/new_rel.htm#new

------------------------------------------------------------------------
3 – New software release (walton)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abinit 5.2.4 is now available on Walton. Its environment can be loaded with the command:

module load abinit5

Note that abinit 4.6.5 is still supported.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
4 – Updated documentation for DDT/OPT
------------------------------------------------------------------------

New documentation on using the parallel debugger and optimiser DDT/OPT is now available at http://www.ichec.ie/user_documentation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
5 – Monthly report for November/December 2006
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monthly reports for the National Service can be found at http://www.ichec.ie/reports. The November 2006 report is now available on-line, and the December 2006 will follow very shortly.
