1 Christmas Holiday Arrangements

Over the holiday period ICHEC staff will only be providing emergency cover
between the following two dates (inclusive):

Saturday, 22nd December 2012 to Wednesday, 2nd January 2013

If users encounter any problems during this period they can log a Helpdesk
query and it will be dealt with by a member of staff as soon as possible.

2 User project core hour balance and storage quota

To avoid running out of core hours and/or disk space during the holiday period,
it's advisable to review your available resources before the holidays. Please
use the following commands: 'mybalance' and 'quota' to determine if you are
likely to run out over the holidays. If so, please log a query on the
helpdesk for assistance.

3 ICHEC @ BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2013

ICHEC is proud to announce that we will exhibit at the 2013 BT Young Scientist
& Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE - www.btyoungscientist.ie/). A preview of our
stand can be found here:

We will showcase all things supercomputing to primary and secondary level
students. At the stand in the World of Science & Technology Hall ICHEC will
display a fully configured live mini supercomputer built from the Raspberry
Pi boards, 3D scientific visualisations of climate and weather data, present
the latest in accelerators (live NVIDIA K20 demo running a Molecular Dynamics
simulation using NAMD)/coprocessors (live Intel Xeon Phi demo running a sudoku
solver) and run introductory sessions into HPC, networking, and parallel
programming languages.

We would like to thank:
* Dr. Michael Hartnett and Dr Indie Olbert, Marine Modelling Centre, NUI
Galway for providing their Irish Sea model data.
* Prof. Colin O'Dowd, Climate Change and Air Pollution Studies, NUI Galway
for providing their Ash cloud model data.
* Met √Čireann and the EPA for the Harmonie weather data.

Users interested in providing their models for demonstrations in future events
should email Dr. Martin Peters (martin.peters@ichec.ie) with details.

We look forward to seeing you at the young scientist!

4 PRACE Summer of HPC

We are pleased to announce the PRACE Summer of HPC (SoHPC) - A student placement
programme for Summer 2013 designed and managed by ICHEC. The PRACE SoHPC will
offer up to twenty undergraduates and junior postgraduate students of accredited
universities the opportunity to spend two months at one of 10 HPC centres in
PRACE partner countries. Students will undertake a visualisation project based
on outcomes from PRACE technical work or other work using PRACE resources such
as Tier-0/Tier-1 computers.

Details of the programme can be found on the site:

And social media sites:

Please forward the details of the programme to suitable students.

5 ICHEC Wins HPCWire Award

ICHEC is delighted to announce that a project led by two of ICHEC's staff, Mr.
Gilles Civario and Mr. Renato Miceli, has won the HPCwire Readers' Choice
Award 2012 under the 'Best use of HPC in financial services' category. The
awarding ceremony took place in Salt Lake City, USA, during the 2012
International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage
and Analysis (SC12), the largest High Performance Computing (HPC) conference
in the world. The full press release can be found here:

6 New Class A/B Proposal Template

Users planning on submitting class A or B applications in the coming months
should be advised that a new template is now available:

To avoid delays we recommend that users follow these guidelines when writing
new proposals. The template provides examples of application scaling graphs,
a requested core hour breakdown table and workplan graphics that should be
used. On request from our science council, all new applications will also
require PIs to provide short biographies plus a description of prior use of
HPC resources.

If you have any questions ahead of submitting a class A or B application
please contact our user support activity leader, Dr. Martin Peters
(martin.peters@ichec.ie) to discuss your proposal ahead of submission.

7 PRACE 7th Call for Proposals

Exploiting the possibilities of external access programmes such as PRACE
(Tier-0) and DECI (Tier-1) are an opportunity to get access to some of the
world's largest HPC systems. ICHEC has assisted numerous users in the
preparation of applications for such programmes and will be happy to help
should you be interested. It is our policy to offer assistance to users who
secure time outside Ireland as we do on our own systems in so far as is

The European PRACE (http://prace-ri.eu) organisation is expected to open the
7th Call for Proposals on the 13th February 2013. PRACE encourages researchers
from across Europe to apply for access to its world class resources for
research with potential high European and international impact. PRACE resources
are available through three forms of access:

* Multi-year Access,
* Project Access and
* Preparatory Access.

Multi-year Access is available to major European projects or infrastructures
that can benefit from PRACE resources and for which Project Access is not
appropriate. Project Access is intended for individual researchers and
research groups including multi-national research groups and has a one year
duration. Calls for Proposals for Project Access are issued twice yearly.
Preparatory Access is intended for resource use required to prepare proposals
for Project Access. Applications for Preparatory Access are accepted at any

The tentative details of the 7th PRACE Call for Proposals are the following:

* Opening date: 13th February 2013
* Closing date: 26th March 2013, 12:00 (noon) CET
* Response of applicants to reviews: 7th June 2013
* Anticipated allocation decisions: 10th July 2013
* Allocation start date of awarded proposals: 3rd September 2013
* Allocation end date of award: 3rd September 2014

For up-to-date details see: http://www.prace-project.eu/Call-Announcements

We would invite PIs interested in these calls to notify our user support
activity leader, Dr. Martin Peters (martin.peters@ichec.ie) in good time.

8 Training Events in 2013

ICHEC would like to announce that Dublin will be hosting the PRACE Winter
school in early 2013. The school will run over 4-5 days covering topics such
as parallel programming and scientific visualisation. We would invite users
(students/ post-docs/ PIs) interested in this school to notify our training
coordinator Dr. Simon Wong (training@ichec.ie).

The ICHEC Team would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your
support during 2012 and wish you a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
