Storm Brian Forecast

After Storm Ophelia brought Ireland to a standstill last weekend, there is considerable interest in storms and how they will affect Ireland. Recently researchers at ICHEC and UCD examined whether climate change will have an impact on the frequency and intensity of Irish storms in the future. These results were presented in an expert statement published by the Royal Irish Academy Climate Change and Environmental Sciences Committee.

As we did with Ophelia last week, ICHEC obtained rainfall forecasts for Storm Brian at 2.4km by downscaling the Global Forecast System (GFS) data using the WRF model. The large and small domains have 12km and 2.4km spatial resolution, respectively. The forecasts were run on the ICHEC supercomputer systems.

The Forecasts were initialised on Friday 20th October, 0600 UTC.
